I, too, tightened the screw to keep it straight. I also used a piece of old inner tube to keep the clamp from moving around on the bar. It
didn't do it at first. I wonder if by over tightening, I was pulling out the threaded insert in the clamp.
That's exactly what I do as well. I lost one of the rubber spacers so now it only stays tight on the thickest of bars.
