My bro-in-law and I tried this, beginning in Yorktown on May 1 of last year. We made it through Map 12 (Yorktown-Christiansburg VA) before health issues forced us to reconsider. You'll pass within a couple of miles of my house on day two or three of your trip, and his the next day. Good luck!
We were riding unsupported and carrying a lot of gear, four panniers and about 50 pounds each total. Jeff opined more than once that he'd consider a sagged tour for a TransAm next time, and we were passed by one such group during our ride, all of whom (including one lady several years older than our mid-'60s selves) left us churning on the climbs.

My Day 1 will be Yorktown to our home in RVA!!! We have probably passed each other then on the Cap2Cap trail!! If all goes well, my wife will pick me up with our car in Berea, KY ~13 days later... She will do I-64. I prefer the backroads of ACA's Trans AM route!! Lots of people will most likely pass me @ ~10 mph. As long as we all make it safety, I am OK with that!
