Here's one for you. Lot's of talk these days about folks being "on tenterhooks". I've heard it all my life. They are talking about the citizens of London being on tenterhooks right now due to the firearms incident at Parliament that just occurred. It so happens that in my job we actually worked with tenter frames and tenterhooks. So who among you actually knows what they are without looking it up? Not just the derivative linguistic implication of anxiety, but the real meaning?
