I'm sure it will work if you're not doing hard core road races. You'd give up some aero, but if you're just tooling around sub-20mph, I don't think it would make that much of a difference.
The fit is a little different because of the higher BB, and perhaps shorter TT, so I'd want to get it from a good LBS that understands what you're trying to do.
The Cross Veloce looks like a nice bike. There are a range of nice CX bikes out there, like: the Veloce; Ridley has a good CX line; Kona, the Specialized Tricross. Might want to look at the Raleigh CX bike. There's nice Ti CX frames out there too.
They're all almost too nice for mud, but you can see that they have nice components and higher end frame elements, like CF stays.
