The shoe is what I'm having the hardest time figuring out. Is getting a MTB shoe with the stiffness of a road shoe going to be noticeable over one that's a little bit softer (say Shimano stiffness index 11 vs 6). I was thinking the PI X-Project 1.0 but have been reading up on the XC61 which seem about the same. The pedals I can get on Amazon for cheaper than LBS, shoes too probably but it would be a gamble with the size. I gotta do more digging to see if anybody on Oahu has them or if they got rid of them to make room for the new shoes this year. How close does Shimano run to US sizes?
The pedals I use on the road are similar to the M8000s. They work great with a stiff shoe. IMO the stiffness of the shoe is going to make more of a difference than how much of a platform your pedal has.
