I selected a nice older road bike for my wife a long time ago. It had Shimano SPD clipless pedals, if I recall which was a bit too advanced for her. It ended up collecting dust in the basement. And I ended up selling it. So definately try to take her and the baby along and let her ride the bike before purchase, if possible. Also, if you know her size, then don't be afraid of local Ebay and Craigslist postings. Give the seller a call and schedule a time to go over and see the bike. That's how I got the old road bike. You can get some nice deals there as well. However, I agree with going to Performance if there is one near you. I wish there was one in north NJ. Also REI like mentioned above is a good place for bikes.
