Lately though I have to pay Canadian tax and a small brokerage feel leveled by the Canadian Post Office (not more than 10 dollars). These were small packages and I see on the website there is the option of having them mail it to you with a small chance duty might be leveled in Canada. On large items, you will always pay duty.

If you are close to the border as others have suggested having them sent to US and then you pick them up is an option. When you cross the border back into Canada, you are legally required to pay sales tax unless you stay in the US for three days. It seems to be getting harder and harder to find the deals.
