I'm that guy, and yeah it can be irritating.
For bikes I try to flash my eye lids at the ladies so they'll fix my flats for me. Never seems to work, might have something to do with me riding by myself...
I will say I have received gifts from women in appreciation after helping them out with mechanical issues so I can't complain.
