I don't think any one has done up a chart or list of which cranksets are what speed compatible. But here's some basic guidelines. Pretty much any 1980s cranks are 8 speed or less. Pretty much any ramped or pinned crankset is not 6 speed. Pretty much any ramped or pinned ring that is bolt mounted will be 7, 8 or 9 speed intended.


The issues are two fold. First is the chain width and ring c-c and if the chain scuffs the insides of the adjacent and larger ring when in the small rear cogs, lift pins sticking out a tad more then the teeth make this chance greater. Second is the ring c-c and indexing compatibility. But if you're using friction levers for the LH side this is moot. Andy.
