Reconsidering Roam 2 and thinking ToughRoad SLR2

After test driving both the 2017 Roam 2 and Specialized Crosstrail I finally had decided on the Roam 2. Now that I am reading lots of threads here I am now thinking that maybe the ToughRoad SLR 2 is the way to go for me. I really don't want to spend much more than the cost of the Roam 2 but I might be able to put up the extra cash for the ToughRoad. Anyway, I ride mostly on pavement (90%) with occassional gravel and dirt roads. I know that I do not need suspension for pavement but I figured that I can just lockout the fork on the Roam 2 when I am on pavement. I know that the SLR 2 does not have a fork.....is it better to have a front fork for gravel and dirt roads? Will I be able to go faster on the ToughRoad on pavement? Any input is much appreciated!!! Thanks!!!
