I think I've had better luck with glue type patches than glueless patches..

For re-using tubes, I've seen them put on bicycle lock chains to protect the bike.

A bit different scope, but motorcycle tubes make excellent rubber bands for things like attaching a fishing pole case to a backpack frame.
And trust me on this.. Cliff is an expert on reusing old tubes.
