I want to retract everything I wrote before and agree it all depends on front and rear chainline, which depend on axle/crankset and rear hub/freewheel/cassette dimensions. sheldon brown has a good article: sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html
I measured everything on the 86 tempo and now believe the 116 axle is too short on the drive side since it provides a front chainline around 40 mm on the GLP double crankset, whereas the rear is 42-43 mm with a 126 hub and 6 speed freewheel. an asymmetrical 119 axle is probably what is needed for the GP/GLP double with a 126 rear hub. or a 121.5 axle with a 130 rear hub, 124-125 axle with a 135 rear hub, etc. On the 86 Tempo, a specialized/sugino triple crankset used as a double gives me a front chainline of 43 mm with the 116 axle.
