It's ironic that OP's kitten assistance problem is solved by both of those suggestions. They really hate the sound of compressed air and deflating a tube!

I agree with OP that cleaning out dried out mud from all the nooks and crannies is the worst ... so I don't do it. Get the drive train clean, quick wipe down and good to go.
