I just picked up a cheap Trek 830 in a pretty tall frame. My plans involve replacing the knobbies with 2.25" low profile tread tires (to maximize wheel diameter and offer the plushest ride), and replacing the flat bar with a Gary 2 Origin8 bar, barcons, and some basic brake hoods, and as a much lower priority maybe V-brakes to replace the fussy and somewhat underperforming Alivio calipers. I really like the geometry, and honestly think it could make a fantastic all-arounder.
I've got a big 1995 Trek 830 and with fat slicks and drops, it would be an amazing all-rounder. Check out the vintage MTB drop bar conversions thread, if you haven't already. There are some amazing bikes in there!
