Cheapest solution is to try a Linux distro on your existing Laptop. I like Xubuntu, but there are many to choose from. Xubuntu seems to be in the middle of the "too may apps and I don't need most" to "very few apps and I need to install a bunch of stuff" scale. Also seems to use less memory than the Gnome or KDE desktops.

Don't get me wrong. I like Apple hardware. My wife has the 17" Macbook at home. But I think you still get more bang for your buck with non-Apple stuff.
