Bikes: 199? Landshark Roadshark, 198? Mondonico Diamond, 1987 Panasonic DX-5000, 1987 Bianchi Limited, Univega... Chrome..., 1989 Schwinn Woodlands, Motobecane USA Record, Raleigh Tokul 2

Why you should always check hubs when you buy a used bike...

Anyone want to guess how many bearing balls were inside the NDS of my rear hub on my recent Mondonico acquisition?

I mean, the obvious answer would be 9 per side for 18 total.

Not quite true on this one.

I ended up with a total of 15. 9 on one side, 6 on the other.

WTF...? How does that even happen? The missing bearings were nowhere to be found...

I should count my blessings that they actually had usable grease on them...

I was wondering why that hub felt weird (it was getting replaced so I didn't care... much.) I did, however, ride this bike a few times on 30+ milers. Hm, maybe that's why this hub vibrated when I pedaled very hard. I thought it was a worn cassette. (Chain and chainrings were new.)
