I don't consider the GP4000S to be a performance-only tire. Performance only tires are the 1200-mile-lifespan, minimal puncture protection, light weight and grip at all costs, racing tires. The GP4000 has long tread life, and good puncture protection under the tread. The GP4000S thin, lightweight sidewalls are the tradeoff, giving a smooth ride at the risk of sidewall cuts. The GP 4season has an extra layer of sidewall protection, and maybe a little thicker tread, so it's not as supple.

Four years ago, I cut the sidewalls on three tires within 6 months. I was wondering if I needed to get sturdier tires. But, since then, I've had no sidewall cuts at all, riding around 4000 miles a year. So there's some luck involved. But I normally ride in the right tire track on the road, not on the shoulder. Car tires kick debris over to the side of the road.
