The only reason I could see to replace a bottom bracket is if I wanted a new crankset or wanted to go from loose bearings to cartridge bearings (or, I suppose, if it wore out, but that seems to be one of the slower wearing parts in my experience, I've usually changed what I'm doing with the bike and wanted new crankset or whatever long before that point).
