You need a 9-speed cassette since you have 9-speed shifters. A 9-speed Rear Derailleur will shift an 8-speed cassette if used with 8-speed shifters.
Your existing crankset should be fine with the Shimano front derailleur, so that should save you more than enough to do everything for ~$200.
