I prefer to go solo. With a busy family and work, it's my Me Time.

I had a phase last year where if it was noticeably breezy, I wouldn't go ride. I had to make a concerted effort to ignore the trees and wind forecast and just go anyway. (granted, if it's windy I will pick a route that has me coming home with the wind --I'm not stupid).

Takes a little bit of discipline and at first, maybe it's just 30-45min. Enough to say you did it. Tomorrow, ride that accomplishment and get out there again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

What are the impediments? I bought a road bike because I didn't like driving to trails; I wasn't riding my bike because the thought of packing the bike and driving somewhere was impediment enough to not do it. Identify what those triggers are for you, and eliminate them. If going alone keeps you on the couch, find group rides or a buddy or two. Local bike shops, meetup.com, or ask here on BF.

You can also ask if you're fit enough to race, and drag that out for a year. That seemed to work too

[edit] you're in the SF area -- you are in one of the country's cycling meccas. Shut up and get out there.
