That works. In this case I am probably coming from the wrong perspective in that much of what I deal with has probably spent the last years of its life sat in someone's back yard being rained upon. As a matter of course I remove everything and check. Some threads are clean, some are rusty and some are coated with what looks like lime-scale as well as rust. It all gets cleaned out and put back together with Copaslip. I guess it depends on your knowledge of the bikes past history.
