Just for the record the race is the usual term for the cone that sits on the fork's steerer base. The plastic (or more often, metal) retaing ring of balls is called a retainer usually. The plastic type generally have fewer balls the some metal ones do but, IMO, take up more volume so there's less room for grease. I agree with the suggestions to toss the old retainers and fit loose balls instead. Typically 11 1/4" per cup. Use enough grease to get some squeeze out when assembling. And add a film of grease to the insides of the shell and the reachable insides of the frame tubes. Andy
