First post for a newbie to the hybrid world. Getting a little older (58), not wiser, and my old 26 inch, knobby tired MTB no longer fits the bill. Want to do a lot more paved rural road, low traffic rides as well and paved marked trails. No desire to ride on heavy traffic city streets. Dirt days are over with. I live in a quite rural area and any bike shops of significance are 1-2 hour drives each way. But, within a rather short driving distance I have 1 authorized Trek and 1 Norco dealer. Both suggest hybrids over road bikes. I have been in contact with both by phone. My basic choices, within my budget of $800 cdn, is a Trek FX2, Trek FX3, and a Norco VFR 5. The FX3 is about $20 over my budget, but I can live with that. The dealers have them in shops. I've compared the bikes as best I know how, mainly the derailers, tire size, and some other components. It appears of if the derailers are lower end Shimano and tires appear pretty much the equal in size. Gearing seems equal two. I understand that test riding each is a must, but any other pros/cons of each of the above would be appreciated. Or do I take a day trip and head to the city (Toronto) and hit some of the specialty shops of Trek, Giant, or some of the "big" bike shops and get more confused with better overall selection

Thanks so much everyone, appreciate your time, and like this forum.
