I guess I always thought it was in reference to the more C&V days when the shifters were still on the downtubes and the levers were rotated further down on the curve of the drops (hoods pointed forward rather than up as seems to be the style today), that it was theoretically possible to slip forward and off the hoods while you were more locked in in the drops, but I have no ideal. I have big hands.
