I've never purchased a trainer tire, but I have found old, hard, slick tires to be significantly quieter and smoother on the trainer. Like dirt-track motorcycle race tires aged in the sun, the same qualities that make riding them a poor choice on the road make them great indoors. My current trainer tires came on a 2005 Cannondale and look like they never saw pavement.
