While I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment, I think it fair to say the car analogy isn't ALL about the money. I know I as a parent would be totally put off by this tactic. To me, it's more about educating his unknowing parents about cost relative to quality when it comes to road bikes.
The point isn't for us to arm this lad with reasons as to why he should spend the money, but rather the value of the amount he stated he wanted to spend.
