There really is no camping along the canal except the locks, not that I know of. That being said Green Lakes State Park is right next to the erie canal out towards "dewitt" which is really part of the syracuse area(East). People camp there and simply ride across the street to the canal. That part of the canal is a real long stretch. It goes almost to Albany.
