Ten years ago the rage was carbon blades with Crmoly threaded steerer examples of which are Kestrel EMS and Time Vectran and these used to weigh around 530gm ( yes I have bought them in my time).
Cinelli make a 1" quill to threadless type of stem. Profile Tech make a quill adapter to go from 1" threaded to 1 1/8 threadless both of which cost arond $20.
The combo of carbon/crmoly steerer threaded fork, quill stem and a 220 gm Al bar is the lighter of the two comparing it to carbon/crmoly steerer threaded fork, quill adapter, stem, Al handlebar. The new threadless equipment only saves weight if you go threadless all the way and use a lightweight all carbon fork something around 320 gm such as the Easton 90sl which is available in 1" steerer.
Well, the reason for going with a quill adapter was to get the versatility of the threadless style stem so I can switch lengths and flip if it if needed giving me greater flexibility in adjusting the fit initially. Personally, I think quill stems look better. There is basically no chance of changing to a threadless since the headtube is designed for 1" threaded headset/fork am I right?
