Accidents can happen anywhere and you shouldn't ride a sidewalk at speed and you always have to keep your eyes on the driveways. I use the paths to avoid intersections and narrow busy roads then go back on-road.
But lets be honest, most cyclists are on racers with super slim wheels and simply can't easily ride the footpath. Because of this fact they have to dream up reasons why it's not safe 
Let us be honest, you are simply trying to dream up reasons that so few cyclist agree with you.
I have 8 bicycles from 2 top end road to touring to FG/SS to recumbent to folding to mountain bike with 2+" wide tires to modified mountain bike with 1" road tires for commuting and utility (with fitted trailer for additional packing).
The mountain bike gets used mostly on single track, but while riding to the trail, I still use the road the same as I ride all the other cycles.
