Only you can decide how and where you want to ride. If you know other cyclists you want to ride with, they will be your best resource. If you don't know other cyclists, network and find some. A bike shop can be a blessing or a curse. A good one will ask you many questions: Long distances in the countryside? Ride to the grocery store and the library? City streets, paved roads or dirt? These would be just a few of the questions. A less good bike shop will size you up when you walk in the door and because you present as a “beginner,” give you a “beginner’s bike.”
