What kind of pedals/cleats are you using? With 2-bolt cleats, it is fairly easy to move them laterally to give yourself a wider stance, which winds up being a bit safer than pedal extenders (which I thought I needed, but didn't). I would try that first.
If it turns out you need a wider stance in addition, it might be worth trying something like the iSSi pedals with longer axles.
I think the Specialized pedal extenders were voluntarily recalled; most of the other ones I have seen look the same, so by inference, I would (and did) hesitate.
