I live in Illinois and developing climbing strength in the middle of America takes some planning.

I've been riding along the Mississippi river just south of St. Louis in southeastern Illinois to improve my climbing ability. A bluff about 300 ft above the flood plain of the river provides the opportunity to climb 7 to 18% grades.

On Saturday I got in about 2500 feet of climbing and 60 miles. See: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1789240126
