Update: Road to 1st Metric Century - Nutrition Worked
Last week I posted a thread after my longest ride of 43 miles. I was asking nutritional advice.
I took all of your guy's advice and put it to practice on my new longest ride of 50 miles last weekend.
For my nutrition, I aimed for 100 calories per hour and drinking one bottle of water per 1.5 hours.
I was in much better shape after the ride - even went on a 5 mile run after I got off the bike.
I skipped breakfast and decided to run on the carb stores from the day before. I increased my carb ratio (but not calories) on Saturday. So Sun morning, I felt like I had plenty stored.
The 2nd I got on the bike, I ate a fig bar... OMG those things are amazing. I might just ride so I can eat those all day.
Every 20 minutes, I drank a little water.
50 minutes in, I ate the other fig bar.
50 minutes later, I had my 1st ever Hammer. That was good. I needed it. I felt the energy after taking it.
At mile 40, I took something called untapped. My LBS recommended it toward the end of a long ride. Turns out it is 100% maple syrup. I hadnt noticed when I bought it that it has 26 grams of sugar. I havent had sugar in 7-8 years.
I felt like freaking superman after that untapped and killed the last 10 miles. I think all that sugar is why I had to then run 5 miles.
I felt good. I sweated like a MOFO, but never felt dehydrated. I cant eat or drink on a bike yet. I have to stop. (Havent figured out how to take my hands off the handlebars). So afterwards, I feel great and refreshed. I finished the 50 miles in 3:07... around 15.5mph.
One bad thing... I think the lactic acid really built up in my thighs about 10 minutes after I got off the bike. Not as bad as last week, but very painful. Ate a couple spoons of mustard and was fine within 10 more minutes.
I am ready for the metric century ride next Saturday, thanks to the help of a lot of you guys. Now the only thing I am worried about... I have never rode my bike with a group, and I am going to be at an event with hundreds of riders.
