I wanted at least clearance for 45c tires, at least a 2x setup and for whatever reasons, also wanted hydraulic or mech/hyd disc brakes. Got a Mongoose Selous Comp for about $700. I've put roughly 1000 mixed miles on it in the last 3 months. Nothing great but decent components for the price.
