I used a hard tail Haro mountain bike, only commuter mod is a front handlebar bag; still on knobbies. I'd like to have something more upright and with less rolling resistance (and fenders!) but for now this will be ok. If I do it much more I'll either mod the bike or get something different.
Welcome back! Yea, it doesn't take long to justify a need for a new bike.

That sounds like you'd need to carry a few gallons of water and have a constant stream into your mouth.
