Tailwinds help a lot. I grabbed my first KOM from a stiff tailwind that had me riding over 35 mph, where as with no wind (those ten days a year) I would be around 10 mph slower when going at it hard.
The rest of my route is owned by an outlier with the rest of the segments at 32 mph (heart rate is 110 for one of them), which is speed limit of the road. I'm wondering if the guys is super strong, had massive tailwind, was drafting a truck, or left his GPS on while driving out to a ride. I'm still pretty close to some of them, from same things I mentioned, but 10-15 seconds is huge on a short segment.
