If the edges of the "gash" are rounded, smooth, polished, or have clear coat on them, then it is highly unlikely to be a chip or scratch. More than likely came from the factory like that.
It is hard to photograph, but it looks like this happened after the clearcoat was applied - the edges are ragged rather than covered with a layer of clear coat.
I'll bring it to my local shop today.
