I checked the spoke tension after every tug and stopped when they were close to being even. Then I finished the job by adjusting spokes.

I just rode the bike for the first time after adjusting it, and I'm happy with the feel. The brakes work fine without rubbing, and I don't feel anything amiss on the road. So if you guys will tell me what to do to keep it this way I'll be a happy camper for a while.
Unfortunately, there isn't a ton you can do with a bent rim. Ride it 'till it breaks. I would have also have tried to bend the rim back like you did.

With uneven spoke tension, what will likely happen is you'll break a spoke... then two... then three until fixing the wheel isn't convenient/cheap any more.
