Nevertheless, I just think it is a bit presumptuous, naive and even conceited for humans to think that we have any say in the long term survival of our species.

Do what makes you happy ... do what you think is best for you and your family. It's not really going to make any significant difference one way or the other to the "big picture", but might make a small difference to those you immediately associate with.
