Well, I finally took the Connecticut Airline Trail South ride I asked about last year - 40 miles (round trip) from East Hampton to Willimantic. It was really good and I'm hoping to make it into a monthly part of my routine. I highly recommend it to anyone in the area.

The trail is unpaved but very well maintained. In fact a 1/4 mile section is presently under repair but easily traversed.

A MTB isn't necessary but I recommend puncture resistant tires.
