Check out the Tektro RL-340 brake levers. I just did that upgrade to my bike. They are fairly reasonable at about $20, and also very comfortable. They will probably make a noticeable difference in your ability to stop too. If you have the budget, consider upgrading the brake calipers to dual pivot, and that will help too.

having a squirrel jump out in front of me today is making me think about better brakes even more lol
