Yeah, that's the thing about working on older bikes. You never know exactly what combination of stupidity, abuse and repair fails lie beneath the surface. I once bought a 1975 Raleigh Sprite for $40. As I started cleaning it up, it became obvious that the owner bought it new, rode it for a couple of miles, and got a flat. It was hung upside down in the garage for forty years and sold to me as the elderly began to downsize.
