Remove the QR skewer. That can get in the way and prevent the wheel from sliding in easily. Refit the skewer afterwards.

Also the wheel will go in easier if the RD is shifted into the highest gear (smallest cog). And the chain is hooked onto the smallest cog while you insert the wheel.
