The other thing is remembering to wipe down chain etc. Or you'll have grease all over. I would get a cheap trunk rack off CL or new, they are not much and easy to get on and off.
If it is his nice car, I would not put a trunk rack on it.
The swimming pool noodle is a good bet, less prone to tear than pipe insulation. However, clear flexible PVC pipe from the hardware store would work or a block of non styrofoam foam.
