Today I did the 20 minute test. My result was X. Knowing my cycling ability I know there is no way I could maintain or even average X power for one hour.

So is my ftp really X?

Just wondering.

Functional Threshold Power was developed by Dr. Andrew Coggan and is specifically defined as “the highest power a rider can maintain in a quasi-steady state without fatiguing.”
As noted, MLSS is an exercise intensity that can typically be sustained for 30 to 70 minutes. Since FTP is a simplified tracking metric of MLSS, it has the same sustainable time range (not specifically one hour, as often stated by others).
