At the end of the day, effort or not, fixed gear is just so much more badass than a geared bike. That's what really matters.

I let people try my fixed gear bike all the time. They pedal it around the parking lot in their sneakers and come back to the car with huge smiles, say things like, "That is insane!" and so forth. One guy got off and walked back shaking his head, totally frightened by the thing.
