IME it's a good method to put the rider in balance. Have you tried to do this with a large number of people and found it not to work? There are undoubtedly some oddly proportioned people out there, but for most riders it does work. You might want to try it yourself.

Nothing to do with a tightwire or balancing ability. Most folks CGs are in a pretty tight area, within a few horizontal cm when in the road cycling position. Like I said, try it. You probably can and don't even realize it. Just lift your hands off the hoods briefly. Go do it right now.
