I tend to turn it off or turn it down if I'm going under an overpass though. Regarding batteries, I can't say about how long they last but I try to only use the light in conditions that I think are a bit higher risk regarding traffic, so I don't use it on average, more than roughly 2-5 hours/week.
The too much mode is useful when riding into the sun or when there is heavy fog. I normally run mine at 1/2 power during the day and low with a pulse at night.

I use RC hobby batteries which go for 12 hours or so on a low setting and around 5 hours when I run a DS front and rear switching between high medium and low settings. The RC charger also lets me know exactly how much charge the battery holds and if the capacity is degrading.
