The "different tools for different jobs" concept is not too easily grasped by some who need to be right, and cannot tolerate variety.

I have the Spyres as well. Good brakes. Not dramatically better than Ultegra or Tiagra rim brakes except on the very few wet rides I do ... and honestly, not a lot better there. Still, better in the wet or damp. (And I haven't even installed the KoolStop Salmons yet--we'll see how Ultegra compares then.)

I see a lot of biased crap ... the disc-brake-equipped bikes which were ridden by stage winners ... Marcel Kittel could win on a child's tricycle. On a bike built to the lower UCI weight limit ... for a sprinter, brakes simply don't matter. He weighs what, 88 kg? And he puts out (according to his team manager) 2100 watts.

The climbers weigh what 60 kg? and put out a fraction of that power, but do it steadily through the length of several climbs. I haven't seen discs on Any climber's bikes, any serious GC contenders' bikes.

Discs might have made a difference on the wet descents, the sort which claimed Ritchie Porte ... but A.) wouldn't have helped in that particular crash, B.) wouldn't help much on narrow tires on wet roads, and C.) would have slowed the riders on the climbs.

Probably a lot to do with the fact that if a climber gets a flat on a climb, the neutral service car might not have the right wheel, and most of the team cars aren't able to squeeze through. The climber needs to get back on the bike Immediately, because the GC could be in the balance.

If a sprinter gets a flat, he can afford to wait for the team car, because he is either in the first three quarters of the stage, and has time to get back, or is in the final kms, and has already lost once he flats. if he doesn't win a sprint, too bad ... he is just a side-show anyway, really.

Tools for jobs.
