I just had to go to one of those big weddings of the in-laws. My brain is fried, and I had NOTHING to drink. Still, it was a couple hundred miles away and I am GLAD to be home with a beer in my hand. Several still in a motel passed out.
You asked about time of the year. I'll assume your wanting to do the trail before Winter. If it were me, and you were looking at fall, I would look at late October. You say "With your son". Have you'all gone a couple hundred miles touring before?
Study the Amtrak routes. Come back and give more details. KT is brutal in the heat of the day in summer. Ask me how I know. Time of the year for me is the key.
